Hork-Bajir Resistance
Free spirits rising from the ashes of slavery to strike back against the Yeerk invasion.
The Hork-Bajir Resistance is a covert guerrilla force composed of enslaved Hork-Bajir who have broken free from Yeerk control and the oppressive rule of Visser Three. Operating primarily on Earth, this group represents the first major organized rebellion by a non-human species against the Yeerk invasion in the series' timeline. Unlike the human Animorphs who fight to save their world, the Resistance fights for survival and freedom after years of brutal conditioning and forced servitude.

Lore & Background
The origins of the Resistance are tragic, rooted in the failed mission of Elfangor Sitterish, a Hork-Bajir who was sent by his own people's elders to Earth to warn them about the Yeerks. Instead, he was captured and controlled by Visser Three for years before regaining his free will. His eventual sacrifice allowed him to pass on critical knowledge to the human Animorphs, but it also planted the seeds of rebellion among other Hork-Bajir who began to question their programming. Over time, small cells of escaped slaves formed a loose network across Earth, hiding in remote areas and striking at Yeerk supply lines. Their existence is precarious; they are hunted relentlessly by the Yeerks and often feared or misunderstood by humans who do not know the Hork-Bajir can be free. The Resistance serves as a bridge between the human fight for freedom and the broader galactic struggle, proving that even the most conditioned slaves can reclaim their minds.
In Their Own Story
The rain hammered against the corrugated tin roof of the abandoned warehouse, masking the sound of three heavy footsteps. Jaraerth crouched in the shadows, his four arms folded tightly across his chest to hide the tremor of fear that ran through him. He was a Hork-Bajir, but not a soldier for Visser Three. The Yeerk inside him had been removed years ago, leaving a hollow ache where the controller's voice used to be. Outside, the hum of a Yeerk patrol drone grew louder. He gripped his makeshift spear, a piece of rebar sharpened to a lethal point. Tonight was not about winning a war; it was about proving that they could still choose their own fate.
Reader's Guide
The Hork-Bajir Resistance lacks the rigid military hierarchy of the Yeerk forces or the formal structure of the Human Alliance. Instead, it operates as a decentralized network of cell groups, often led by individuals who have successfully ejected their Controllers or escaped conditioning. Culturally, they are defined by a deep trauma and a fierce desire for autonomy. Many members struggle with the psychological scars of years spent serving an alien parasite, making trust difficult to establish even among allies like the Animorphs. Their motivation is purely existential: survival and the liberation of their enslaved kin. Militarily, they rely on guerrilla tactics, utilizing their natural agility, four arms for dual-wielding weapons, and knowledge of Yeerk protocols. They frequently coordinate with the Animorphs, providing intelligence or acting as a diversion during critical missions. While humans initially view them with suspicion due to their appearance, shared combat against the Yeerks has forged a bond of mutual respect.
Did You Know?
- The Hork-Bajir Chronicles events occur between The Ellimist Chronicles and The Andalite Chronicles, but the entire story is told by Jara Hamee to Tobias after book #13, The Change, and before the events of #23 The Pretender.
- Tobias makes reference to his restlessness and the fact that there were no missions planned (Prologue, pg ix) during the telling of the Hork-Bajir Chronicles.
- In The Pretender (pg 12), Tobias mentions they had 'worked plenty lately, dealing with the horrifying matter of David, the first new Animorph,' placing the last possible 'break' before book #20, the first book in the David trilogy.
