The Yeerks are a parasitic species requiring hosts to survive outside their homeworld. They enter through the ear canal and wrap around the brain, taking control of the host's body while leaving the host's mind intact but suppressed. This process is known as infestation, and it creates 'Controllers' who serve the Yeerk hierarchy without true free will. The resistance relies on morphing technology developed by the Andalites to fight back. By copying the DNA of any creature they touch, the Animorphs can disguise themselves or gain physical abilities necessary for combat. This power comes with risks; spending too much time in animal form can lead to mental degradation known as 'animalization.'

The history of this conflict stretches back thousands of years into a galactic war between the Yeerks and the Andalites. The arrival of Elfangor's ship on Earth marked the beginning of the local defense, setting the stage for a desperate struggle that tests the limits of friendship, loyalty, and humanity.
